CEOs and Marketing — Unstoppable

CEOs and Marketing

I’ve worked with hundreds of CEOs. When it comes to Marketing, the best of them fall into one specific category: they value Marketing, and they have acquired Marketing skills.

Here are the three key categories CEOs fall into:

  1. Doesn’t Value Marketing: These are CEOs who are stuck with a Sales-driven process. Every new $1 of revenue is directly dependent on their Sales Team generating pipeline. Every new lead is coming either from a referral, or a shared lead aggregation agency. Because of this, they never are able to find exponential growth in their business.
  2. Values Marketing, But Doesn’t Have Marketing Skills: This is the CEO who knows how Marketing can transform their business. But they refuse to get skilled at it. They refuse to understand the difference between Brand Marketing, Direct Response Marketing, and Product Marketing. And because of this, they’re never able to attract or recruit a great Marketer into their organization. And so, they stay stuck with short stints with fractional Marketers, and DIY marketing efforts that never have the stamina to deliver actual results.
  3. Values Marketing, Acquires Marketing Skills: This CEO is the most successful. Think Steve Jobs, Marc Benioff, Larry Ellison, the best of the best. These CEOs understand that you need great Marketing to 10X the yield of a great product and a great sales team. And best of all? Great Marketing talent flocks to these CEOs. Because they know that they’ll get the runway and resources needed to actually do great Marketing and deliver results. This CEO (and the VP of Marketing that decides to work for this CEO), is totally unstoppable in the market.

In today’s world, where Software is easier than ever to create, where products and moats are getting demolished left, right and center. The best CEOs recognize one thing: Trust is the only real moat left. And Trust is built through great Marketing.

So if you’re a CEO, and you’re starting to think about how to invest in Marketing, how to recruit a great VP of Marketing, how to get 10x exponential revenue growth, its time to start getting serious and start considering Marketing as your last true moat. Don’t think of Marketing as pretty colors on your website, think of Marketing as the Trust Moat of your business.

When you do this, you’ll start to invest into Marketing differently. You’ll start to prioritize Marketing differently. You’ll start to win at an exponential scale.
